While most students are focused solely on their coursework, Kendall Rosenburg has taken on an additional challenge that would intimidate many: working full-time as a legislative assistant for Senator Terence Everitt while maintaining her studies as a political science major with a concentration in public policy.

Since January 2025, Kendall has been serving District 18, which encompasses Wake and Granville counties, in a role that demands both versatility and dedication. Her responsibilities span the full spectrum of legislative work—from assisting constituents with state-related concerns and drafting legislation to monitoring committee meetings, managing scheduling, and supporting the Senator’s communications efforts. She also helps coordinate community outreach initiatives, ensuring the office remains accessible and responsive to the public.

Finding Balance Under Pressure

The spring semester presented Kendall with her greatest test: managing the demands of both a full-time legislative position and a complete academic course load during the North Carolina General Assembly’s busy biennial legislative session. Rather than being overwhelmed, she discovered something valuable about herself.

“The most valuable thing I learned in this role is how to balance multiple responsibilities—especially during the spring,” Kendall reflects. “I learned that I’m capable of managing both work and school effectively, and that I can thrive under pressure with the right mindset and structure.”

This experience has created a powerful synergy between her classroom learning and real-world application. Her academic coursework provided a strong foundation for success in the legislative environment, while her daily work experience has brought new depth and relevance to her studies.

“Working in the legislature helped me connect what I was learning in the classroom to real-world situations, making the material feel more relevant and giving me a deeper understanding of how state government actually functions—which you aren’t able to truly see in a classroom,” she explains.

Confirming a Passion for Public Service

What began as a valuable learning opportunity has evolved into something more significant: the confirmation of Kendall’s career path. Her experience has solidified her passion for North Carolina politics and demonstrated her enthusiasm for the legislative process and public service.

“This experience confirmed my passion for working in North Carolina politics and showed me how much I enjoy being part of the legislative process and serving the public,” Kendall notes. While she’s still exploring exactly what her next steps will look like, she’s certain about staying involved in state government and continuing to build relationships and experience in the field.

Whether her future involves remaining in a legislative office, working on campaigns, or exploring policy roles, Kendall is excited about continuing her growth in North Carolina politics.

Advice for Fellow Students

For students considering similar opportunities, Kendall’s message is clear and encouraging: “Do it!

Working in a legislative office is a great way to build relationships and connections that can open doors down the line. It’s also a great way to figure out what you’re passionate about and what kind of work environment you thrive in.

Even if you’re still figuring things out, it’s an experience that will grow your confidence and clarity.”

Kendall’s story demonstrates that with the right mindset and structure, students can successfully balance demanding academic and professional responsibilities while discovering their true passions. Her journey serves as an inspiration to fellow Political Science students looking to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.

As she approaches her December 2025 graduation date, Kendall’s journey proves the value of diving deep into experiential learning opportunities that challenge, educate, and ultimately shape one’s career trajectory in public service. Her experience also highlights the unique advantages of studying at North Carolina State University—located right in the heart of Raleigh, the state capital—where students have unparalleled access to government offices, legislative opportunities, and the chance to turn their political science education into hands-on public service experience.
