The Zeta Epsilon Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha welcomes 29 new members!

Every academic year eligible PS majors are invited to join Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political honor society. Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas to encourage and recognize superior achievement in the study of government and politics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is the only recognized college honor society in the discipline and is now one of the largest constituent members of the Association of College Honor Societies. There is a modest one time fee of $35 for a lifetime membership into the society. Eligibility requirements include:

• 15 credits of PS coursework
• Major GPA of at least 3.25
• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.00
• Junior or senior class standing

The initiation ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 5:30 pm in the Memorial Conference room in Winslow Hall. Dr. Andy Taylor graciously served as Master of Ceremony and Dr. Rachael Overcash was the guest speaker and recipient of the 2017 Zeta Epsilon Chapter Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Overcash is a physician specializing in maternal and fetal medicine in Washington, DC.  She graduated from NC State in 2002 as Senior Class President with majors in Political Science and Biochemistry. She also earned a Master of Public Health from Yale University, attended medical school at the George Washington University, where she completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, and continued her training with a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of California, San Diego. 

During her speech, Dr. Overcash empowered students to advocate for causes they care about, noting that even the smallest acts can have profound impacts on the greater good. She made correlations between her work in medicine and the policies that influence her practice; policies that deeply affect everyday people, especially the underserved. It was a true pleasure observing her passion for women’s health care and learning about her professional journey and experience since her graduation from NC State.
