Meet the Faculty: Jordan Carr Peterson

Jordan Carr Peterson

Jordan Carr Peterson is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science and has been at NC State for two years. He teaches classes related to research and law, such as PS 305: The Justice System in the American Political Process. Professor Peterson is actively involved in research examining political and legal institutions, regulation as a component of the policy process, and intergovernmental relations, as well as how institutional design affects the formulation and implementation of public policy, and publishes frequently on these topics.

Why does the study of political science matter?

It’s important to understand how the institutions that govern us operate.

What is your favorite thing about NC State?

I appreciate the vibrant intellectual community; the personable, engaged colleagues; and the highly motivated students

What is one thing your students would be surprised to know about you?

I once dressed as Ursula from the Little Mermaid for Halloween (and I was in my 30s)

If you could time travel, what advice would you give your college-age self?

You’re not impressing anyone with your esoteric music tastes (still applies to current self)

What is the next thing you hope to accomplish on your wish list?

Converting an ongoing multi-manuscript project into a book

What has surprised you most about your students this year?

Their resilience through the insanity of the pandemic!

On NC State traditions: Krispy Kreme Challenge – do you eat and run or carry your donuts?

I’m vegan and don’t do donuts, but I do love to run so I’ll have to find an acceptable substitute.
