Political Science Club

The Political Science Club at NC State enables students from all majors to explore topics such as politics, policy, public law, and government action. Political science involves the analysis of how public sector entities affect the division of resources on every level – from the smallest town to global markets. President of the Political Science Club, Jonas Bryson said, “The club is a way for students to have an open discussion about political topics”. The club offers activities that allow students to join in political debates, partake in educational trips, and help students learn how to be active citizens (e.g., register to vote, attend public forums, etc.). Secretary Cooper Mitchem said, “The Political Science Club is also a way for students to get further involved on campus and learn about other student organizations that pursue related interests and activities”. The organization also hosts lectures and social events around campus that further explore the field of political science. Vice President Dev Shah said, “The club benefits political science majors since it is a platform for students to discuss and learn about various viewpoints regarding political topics”.

Model United Nations (MUN)

Model United Nations at NC State is an organization in which students take on a national identity and participate in simulated United Nations Security Council sessions where they explore a wide array of international issues. President of Model UN, Federico Lluberes said, “Model UN is a resource for students where they can vocalize and debate their opinions relating to international issues in a club setting”. Vice President Sara Darwish mentioned, “On the surface level Model UN is a club, but it’s a club where students can apply their knowledge in a real-world setting”. Both Lluberes and Darwish aim for Model UN to be an organization that provides students with internships and educational opportunities that further explore international topics within the field of Political Science. One of these opportunities is the ability for students to apply their knowledge of international politics in a competitive manner at Model UN conferences. Conferences provide in-depth simulations of the United Nations Assembly and are held at various universities across the country. Many schools send delegates to debate global issues at a competitive level. While there are various opportunities available to all students, the organization proves to be particularly beneficial for Political Science majors. According to Lluberes, one benefit of Model UN is that it “provides students with the ability to debate others who may have differing perspectives on a wide array of issues”. Lluberes and Darwish agree that the most important benefit of Model UN is that it is a fun and exciting experience for students to connect with others, both locally and nationally, who enjoy global politics.

Society of Politics, Economics, and Law (SPEL) 

The Society of Politics, Economics, and Law, also known as SPEL, is an organization that invites and hosts speakers from multiple disciplines to give lectures at NC State. The various speakers discuss topics and current events relating to politics, economics, and law. Dr. Roy Cordato, SPEL Advisor, said, “SPEL provides students from any discipline the opportunity to meet and discuss topics with established members in various academic fields.” The President of SPEL Mary Platzer said, “SPEL also offers student leadership positions within SPEL that help decide who will speak to NC State.” A few notable SPEL Talks include Soviet defectors from the former Soviet Union and Robert Luddy, founder of CaptiveAire in Raleigh. SPEL emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the organization and provides students the opportunity to meet individuals from different fields to discuss topics in politics, economics, and law.
