MPA Student Spotlight – Daisy Mills

Daisy Mills is completing here second year in the Masters of Public Administration program. See below for our full interview with Daisy to find out why she chose the NCSU MPA program, and what she has learned so far! 

What drew you into the field of public administration?

I studied Social Work in undergrad, but I was more fascinated with the management systems of our public and non-profit entities. I didn’t realize there was a program designed for this exact field of study.

Why did you choose the MPA program at NC State?

Not only the location of NC State, but also the quality of professors and educators at this university was really impressive to me.

What are your career goals?

I am interested in the intersection of public and non-profit organizations, so I am hoping to land a career working as a liaison for nonprofits agencies within a mid-size city.

What have you found to be the most interesting and/or challenging part of Public Administration?

The most interesting part of the program to me is the constant balancing act of managing organization-related employees but also trying to serve taxpayers in the community, as they may not always agree on the course of action.

What has been your favorite part of the MPA program so far?

I’ve met some amazing people who are passionate about service– it’s an underrated career calling.

What advice do you have for students considering an MPA?

If your brain asks questions like: “What systems keep people from accessing what they need? Why do we pay taxes, and where does this money go?”…then this is a great place for you. If you enjoy the status quo, it’s not your program. You will be challenged to think differently.
