Legislative Internship Program: Elvis Mugisha

Elvis Mugisha

Elvis Mugisha was one of only 12 students selected to participate in the 2019 Legislative Internship Program at the North Carolina General Assembly. Now in its 26th session, the program is administered by and includes classes from NC State’s Department of Political Science. The program is open to students from all North Carolina colleges and universities.

Elvis is a senior majoring in political science with a minor in Africana studies who will graduate in December 2020; he plans to attend law school after graduation.

Why did you want to be a legislative intern?

I wanted to participate in the program because it seemed like a unique opportunity to expose myself to a world of government that I had not seen before.

What was the most valuable part of this internship program for you?

Connecting with different people in the General Assembly and experiencing how nice and helpful everyone was. People were very hardworking, but many members would notice you if they saw you also had a strong work ethic.

Each legislative intern cohort is made up of students from schools all over the state. Did you like that aspect of the program?

I loved that aspect of the program because it brings in a lot of different perspectives and new ideas that we may have not heard before. My cohort definitely keeps up with each other and stays in contact. I even met new people from NC State through this program.

Are you involved with any campus organizations?

Yes, I have been a Chancellors Aide since 2018. I am currently a Resident Advisor, and I have been a Member of the Black Male Initiative since my first year on campus.

Do you have a favorite class or professor?

The Legislative Internship class (PS498) with Professor Solari was great. We had a lot of interesting guest speakers who helped me understand the different perspectives and experiences of the elected officials in the North Carolina legislature.

Do you have any advice for current students who are considering applying for this internship program?

Definitely go for it, but understand that your regular day will look a lot different from other students. It is a job and it is a lot of work at times, but it is worth it in the end. If you go in and work hard, you will be able to make an impression and build relationships that will last a lifetime.
