Describe your current position, what you enjoy most about it, and what you find most challenging.

I am a Regional Program Director with the City of Alexandria’s Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities Department. I oversee programming and lead special initiatives and projects that span throughout the department. I am intrigued and elated to work with a jurisdiction committed to advancing racial equity and social justice. I enjoy serving the city and community in a variety of roles and sharing my expertise to advance the quality of life for others. My work allows me to ensure the best customer experiences are delivered equitably and fairly which brings me joy. Unfortunately, maintaining a work-life balance is challenging.

What is a typical workday like for you?

The best aspect of working in Recreation and Parks is not having typical days; no two days are ever the same. I work directly with patrons who frequent recreation centers for leisure services. Most days entail spending time with my team to ensure we are providing programs, executing customer service, and being equitable at all times. Working with the public can be unpredictable and spontaneous; nevertheless, it is both challenging and rewarding. I spend significant time participating in meetings to plan and coordinate efforts to accomplish the department’s mission.

How did the MPA program at NC State prepare you for your current position?

I have utilized knowledge from most, if not all, of my classes: Research Methods, Social Equity, Organizational Behavior, and Management Systems. As a result of the MPA program, I better understand government agencies and the significance of evaluating data. For example, data is used to prioritize our program delivery and the efficacy of the program.

What did you enjoy most about being an MPA student?

I enjoyed the faculty support the most. The faculty had realistic expectations for students. They were very empathetic to life’s curveballs and genuinely wanted to see everyone succeed. The flexible office hours, the engaging classes, and the rich dialogue are all components I valued as an MPA student.

Did you complete any hands-on experiences while in the program?

I was not required to complete hands-on experiences as a part of my coursework. However, I worked full-time in a local government agency, while enrolled in the MPA program. By doing so, class information was relevant and applicable for me.

What was your favorite part of the MPA program?

I enjoyed the out-of-classroom activities. The department sponsored my attendance at the NC City-County Management Association Conference and the ASPA Annual Conference. The conferences were enriching experiences because I met leaders throughout the state and discovered more about their responsibilities. I also attended NC State’s MLK Day Commemoration speech with Roland Martin for the social equity class and that was incredible.

What do you find to be the most interesting, or challenging, part of Public Administration?

I fell in love with the social equity class taught by Dr. Berry-James. Specifically, I learned the significance of the social equity pillar of public administration. In a time where social justice is at the forefront of discussions, having additional courses would better equip students to advocate for marginalized communities.

What advice do you have for students considering a career in Public Administration?

WE NEED YOU! Public administration keeps public servants accountable to the communities they serve. We need diversity in the oversight of public officials and innovative solutions to historical dilemmas. The MPA program will broaden your understanding of the federal, state, and local levels. Professionally, we will be set apart from others by being more insightful and knowledgeable. If you are interested in enhancing the quality of life for all, then this is the field for you!
