Political Science Welcomes New Academic Advisor
The Department of Political Science welcomed a new academic advisor, Will Taylor, this summer. Will is excited to be at NC State supporting students as an academic advisor. He has a wealth of experience working with many different student populations. Will received his M.Ed. from University of North Carolina Wilmington. He has also worked at Stony Brook University and Coastal Carolina University in housing and residence life.
What brought you to NC State?
NC State is such a great university, with engaged and accomplished students. Being a part of supporting the student community and NC State’s tradition of excellence is important to me. I have always been passionate about helping students, and look forward to working with them directly as an academic advisor.
What are the best and the most challenging aspects of being an academic advisor?
The most challenging part will be in the transition to a new university and my new role. I know it will be important to hit the ground running and I am ready to do that. The best part is definitely working with students, helping them meet their goals and being successful as they figure out classes, internships, and their futures.
Have you always done this kind of work?
This will be my first solely academic advising position. I have a lot of experience working in student affairs in higher education. Before NC State, I worked in housing and residence life in North Carolina, South Carolina, and New York. My focus was on leadership success and building community. I think the same skills apply to academic advising.
What is one thing students would be surprised to know about you?
While I have a southern accent, I lived in New York for four years, and I can tell you, I know some good pizza!
If you could time travel, what advice would you give to your college-aged self?
I would tell my college-aged self to reach out for support more often, and not to overstress. After working at several universities, I’ve learned so much about campus resources. There are people and programs to support students with everything they want to do in college. I promise you, these professionals are a big help. Also, don’t stress over the small things. I would tell my college-aged self, “you got this and things will get better.”
What are you most looking forward to this year?
I am looking forward to meeting all the students and helping them on their journey to graduation and success!
What do you like to do when not at work?
I am married and recently had a child, so spending time with my family is my favorite thing to do. Also, I love sports so watching the Panthers, Hornets, Hurricanes, Braves, wrestling, and West Ham United is always fun. Finally, I play video games and have a weekly DND group.
