MPA Student Douglas Reyes Receives Belk Impact Fellowship
Douglas Reyes will join the second cohort of John M. Belk Impact Fellows, allowing him to combine what he has learned in his public administration graduate program with hands-on experience in the nonprofit and public sectors. The 10-month fellowship places young professionals with education advocacy organizations in North Carolina with the specific goal of developing future social impact leaders.
“Through the fellowship experience, I will learn more about the educational landscape in the state of North Carolina,” Douglas Reyes said, “specifically for undocumented and DACA students. I hope to be able to connect with educational leaders focusing on expanding educational opportunities for marginalized communities and to develop my professional skills and network as I prepare for employment in the education/nonprofit sector.”
Impact Fellows will gain exposure to a wide array of nonprofit functional areas, including finance and operations, policy and research, philanthropy and grantmaking, communications and marketing, and program management, according to the Hunt Institute. Fellows will also be exposed to a variety of education leaders and engage in rich professional development opportunities.
“We are excited for Doug to have the opportunity to work and learn as a member of this talented cohort of future social impact leaders,” said Amanda J. Stewart, associate professor of public administration. “We commend the Belk Endowment and the Hunt Institute for their commitment to fostering the next generation of leaders.”
Reyes plans to pursue a career in the philanthropy/nonprofit sector to increase educational opportunities for undocumented and DACA students after completing his fellowship. He will graduate from NC State with his master’s of public administration in 2022. Reyes received his bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in computer science from UNC Chapel Hill.
