Meet Public Administration Advisor Meggie Romick

Meggie Romick offers students a unique point of view. She is, not only the graduate services coordinator for all graduate students in the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) and the academic advisor for the Master of Public Administration program, but also a graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development.

As a fourth year graduate student with a full time job, Meggie relates to the students with whom she works on many levels. “I understand the student perspective and that helps me guide them through the process,” Meggie said. It also helps her to be proactive in anticipating and addressing students’ program needs, and her many personal touches have contributed to a sense of community within the department. Meggie also serves as an NC State Mental Health Ambassador (MHA) and actively works to support students through peer to peer education, connections, and prevention services. Earlier this year, Meggie was recognized with the CHASS Award for Excellence for her work and contributions to the department. 

How long have you been at NC State?

I’ve been at State since April of 2017, so a little over four years. 

Which group of students do you advise?

I advise the MPA students and am also the the Graduate Services Coordinator for the Ph.D. in Public Administration program, the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, the Master of International Studies (MIS) program, and our two graduate certificates—policy analysis and nonprofit management. 

What are the best and the most challenging aspects of being an academic advisor?

As an extrovert, I love connecting with people and helping them find their passion. Graduate school is a labor of love, and I firmly believe that having a strong support network is important for student success. 

Have you always done this kind of work?

Actually, no! My bachelor’s degree is in English Composition and Rhetoric and my master’s degree is in Children’s and Young Adult Literature. I had planned on being an editor but got that chance to work with graduate students during my master’s and never looked back. 

What is one thing students would be surprised to know about you?

I love strategy board games and haunted houses.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Getting a chance to meet my advisees in person.

What do you like to do when not at work?

Pet dogs and read YA lit.
