Associate Professor James R. Brunet Recognized for Outstanding Faculty Engagement

Professor James Brunet

Associate Professor James R. Brunet has been selected to receive NC State’s 2021 Outstanding Engagement Award for his work developing the next generation of police leaders in North Carolina. Brunet will also be inducted into the Academy of Outstanding Faculty in Extension and Engagement at the awards ceremony on April 14, 2022.

Dr. Brunet’s work is singularly focused on developing the next generation of public service leaders within our state and beyond. He directs and teaches in the two longest serving engagement initiatives in CHASS, the Administrative Officers Management Program (AOMP) and the Law Enforcement Executive Program (LEEP). AOMP, which welcomed its first class of students in 1989, is widely recognized as one of the leading residential police management schools in the country. LEEP, founded in the 1960s, provides cutting-edge leadership training for police administrators in smaller North Carolina jurisdictions. The importance of these educational and training activities is evidenced by the sheer number of program participants (over 3,000) and the number of graduates who have achieved the highest rank within their organizations (over 240). For many NC police agencies, graduation from AOMP or LEEP is a prerequisite for a command-level (captain or above) position. Through his instruction, Dr. Brunet has prepared thousands of law enforcement officials to serve their communities fairly, ethically, and competently.

Professor Brunet joins three previous School of Public and International Affairs colleagues in the Academy: Sandy Kessler (1991), Jim Svara (1994), and Michael Vasu (1996). The Outreach and Engagement Awards Celebration will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2022, via Zoom.
